Frustrated with the U.S. involvement in the civil war in El Salvador, Alyx went beyond
petitions and protests by choosing the camera as her vehicle of concern. This began her
career as photojournalist and she went on to cover all of Central America, Mexico, Cuba,
and Haiti. While striving to accurately portray all sides of conflicts and the prevailing
opinions, she discovered that the publication venue still held the power of when, what,
how, and even if to publish.
Alyx has worked as freelance, staff, and agency photographer. She has also taught
photography, and worked as both a photo researcher and editor. As a public speaker, Alyx
now explores the role and responsibility of the media and explains the restrictions of an
individual within the publishing field.
By defining the relationship between the individual and the publishing / broadcasting venue, Alyx provides insight about this issue to the audience and end-receiver of information. Through vibrant photographs, she will provide examples of how indiscriminate cropping and incorrect captions can change the context of an image, and discuss the challenges of working with reporters and editors. Alyx also discusses how the profession might affect personal relationships and the struggles of "civilian" life.
