Crossroads of Haiti

Haiti. Historically - the first free Black republic in the world to gain its independence, 1804. Economically - the poorest country in the western hemisphere. Geographically - only a two-hour flight from the United States. Alyx began visiting Haiti in 1985 and continues to go there annually. Her reasons for going have changed almost as often as the government regimes in power, and each visit brings new knowledge and opportunity.

Through vibrant photographs, Alyx explores her role as friend, photojournalist, and liaison to Haiti. Especially drawn to environmental and health issues, she helps promote ecotourism, and encourages international participation from medical organizations.

Alyx shares her experiences about Haiti through images and stories, and can adapt the presentation to accommodate time and content needs of any middle school, high school, college or professional environment. Alyx can easily tailor the presentation to provide an introduction to the French/Kreyol cultures, the history of the country, the political and environmental challenges that Haiti faces today, and the role of the international media and health care.
